Robert L. Billingsley

Robert Billingsley, a New York-based real estate broker, received the John Carroll Award in ceremonies held at the Westin Copley Place Hotel, Boston, MA on April 30, 1994.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Billingsley began his career in real estate at the firm of Cross & Brown in 1971, later becoming the youngest vice president in that company's history. Over a distinguished 40 year career, Billingsley secured leases on over 15 million square feet of Manhattan real estate and is vice chairman of Cushman Wakefield, a $5 billion international real estate company.

A loyal member of the class of 1968, Billingsley has led numerous class reunion efforts, including a record $1 million drive for the class's 25th reunion. he is a past member of the University's Board of Regents and Board of Governors of the Alumni Association, and is a member of the advisory board for the Steers Center for Global Real Estate' at the McDonough School of Business.

Arthur B. Calcagnini
(1932-2019)

Arthur Calcagnini, a New York-based real estate executive, received the John Carroll Award in ceremonies held at the Westin Copley Place Hotel, Boston, MA on April 30, 1994.

An economics major from Massapequa, NY, Calcagnini went to work for his family's sugar trading business. When the company's Cuban properties were nationalized by the Communist government in 1960, he joined Amerop, a Miami-based commodities trading group, and was named its CEO in 1968. He later joined New York based Lombard and Company, where he a retired chairman and chief executive officer.

At the time of the award, Calcagnini was honored for his $1.5 million gift to fund the ESCAPE retreat plan, a popular program for undergraduates since the late 1980's. Two decades later, Arthur and Nancy Calcagnini made a $17 million gift to build a contemplative center in the Blue Ridge Mountains for ESCAPE and other retreat programs.

"I can't think of a more important investment than to provide young people with the opportunity for quiet introspection and a chance to ask questions of themselves, Calcagnini said in 2012. "This center will provide the potential to enrich every student for a lifetime. It is an important part of achieving the Jesuit philosophy of educating the whole person."

Arthur Calcagnini died in 2019 at the age of 86, survived by his wife, four children, and 12 grandchildren.

Joseph D. Lonardo

Joseph D. ("Joe") Lonardo, a Columbus OH attorney, received the John Carroll Award in ceremonies held at the Westin Copley Place Hotel, Boston, MA on April 30, 1994.

Born and raised in Cleveland, OH, Lonardo was a 1969 graduate of the College where he was a co-captain of the football team and, a tour with the sailing team that has been a source of pride ever since. Following his law degree from Michigan, he joined the Columbus office of the firm of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease, where he has served for over 40 years as a trusted and distinguished attorney in the area of environmental law. His firm's biography stated that " His environmental trial experience is comprehensive defending corporations in actions involving: toxic torts, major federal statutes and companion state laws, federal and state citizen suits, contractual indemnity claims, bankruptcy environmental claims, workplace exposure claims, UST contamination, and common law damage actions." He is now a managing partner at the firm.

A popular speaker at Georgetown events, Lonardo often reminds students that "when you leave Georgetown, Georgetown doesn't have to leave you." A class reunion leader, regional club volunteer, and mentor, Georgetown has never left Lonardo. He has served on the Board of Governors, Board of Regents, and the Board of Advisors of the Alumni Admissions Program. From his 800 mile round trip commute from Columbus to Washington for hundreds of football and basketball games over the years, Lonardo earned the title of "Mr. Georgetown" from alumni in Columbus and those in Washington, where Joe and his wife relocated after his children graduated from school.

Outside of Georgetown, he serves on the board of the National Italian American Foundation, and was given a rare private audience with Pope Francis during a visit to Rome.

"People who enjoy Georgetown make special friendships not only with their contemporaries, but with the students," Lonardo said in 2008. "We all share at least one common bond, and that's Georgetown."

Clare A. O'Callaghan Ed.D.

Clare O'Callaghan, former clinical director of the South End Community Health Center, received the John Carroll Award in ceremonies held at the Westin Copley Place Hotel, Boston, MA on April 30, 1994.

A 1968 graduate of the School of Nursing, O'Callaghan earned master's and doctoral degrees in education from Boston University, and has maintained a private practice in psychology since the mid-1970, specializing in attention deficit disorders and autism among children in the greater Boston area. She is a former professor of neuropsychology and the University of Massachusetts.

A former regional chairman of the Alumni Admissions Program, O'Callaghan served on its Board of Advisors for many years and remains a strong voice for education and childhood development.

Mary Patricia O'Brien Roth

Washington DC

Mary Pat Roth, a former nurse, attorney, and law professor, received the John Carroll Award in ceremonies held at the Westin Copley Place Hotel, Boston, MA on April 30, 1994.

A 1964 graduate of the School of Nursing, Roth worked in the health care field for over a decade before returning to Georgetown for law school, where she earned degrees in 1987 and 1995. A former professor at the Washington College of Law, Roth taught public interest law and studied the legal issues of divorce and domestic violence.

A former president of the Georgetown Club of Metropolitan Washington DC, Roth served on the Board of Governors of the Alumni Association from 1982 to 1988. From 2000 to 2007, she was the director of alumni affairs for the Law Center. Since 2007, she is an attorney in private practice.
