Jane H. Carey

Jane Hopkins Carey, former consultant for the MBNA Education Foundation, received the John Carroll Award in ceremonies held at the Fontainebleau Hotel, Miami, FL, on Feb. 22, 2014.

The awards release on Carey noted the following: " Carey began her 16-year professional career at Georgetown as a speechwriter in the 1980s for then-President Timothy S. Healy, S.J., eventually rising to become associate vice president of the Office of Alumni and University Relations. She then became the first executive director of what is now the Cawley Career Education Center. There, Ms. Carey created a strong counseling and placement program for undergraduates, raising the funds necessary to build a new center in 1995.

"Upon moving with her family to Wilmington, Del., in 1997, Ms. Carey was a grants consultant for the MBNA Education Foundation, working with teachers and community leaders to evaluate cutting-edge teaching programs in K-12 schools throughout the state.

"In 2007, Ms. Carey returned to Georgetown as the managing director for leadership engagement in Georgetown's Office of Advancement. In 2010, she transitioned to her current role as chair of the regents. An integral contributor to the launch of the For Generations to Come campaign, she is also an advocate for scholarship fundraising, having served as a founding member of the Georgetown Scholarship Program Board. Her leadership and lifetime of service have elevated the overall impact of the regents in every aspect of their work for Georgetown. The university recognized the regents' extraordinary service by naming the state-of-the-art science building Regents Hall in 2012.

"A lifelong advocate for education, Ms. Carey has served on the Board of Trustees of Tower Hill School in Wilmington and currently serves as vice chair on the Board of Trustees of the Buffalo Seminary in Buffalo, N.Y., and as a member of the Parents Council of St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y."

John C. Courtin
(1948-2014)

John Courtin, a Buffalo attorney and former executive director of the Georgetown University Alumni Association, received the John Carroll Award in ceremonies held at the Fontainebleau Hotel, Miami, FL, on Feb. 22, 2014.

The awards release on Courtin noted the following: " Mr. Courtin has been recognized as "one of the most significant individuals in the history of rowing at Georgetown" by Tony Johnson, head coach of rowing. As an undergraduate, Mr. Courtin was a member of the eight-oared heavyweight crew that rowed to first place at the 1969 Dad Vail Regatta. After earning his bachelor's degree, Mr. Courtin began his career at the Georgetown University Alumni Association. [He] coached the varsity lightweight rowing team for two seasons while working at the Alumni House. As director of the Annual Fund, he brought annual giving to its first $1 million mark...In 1984, Mr. Courtin became executive director of the alumni association. His many accomplishments as director included conceptualizing and constructing the Reed Alumni Residence. He also taught as an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law.

Following a six-year tenure as director, Mr. Courtin moved to Buffalo, N.Y., where he practiced law and co-founded the Martin House Restoration Corp. In 1998, he gave up his law practice to serve as the corporation's full-time executive director. Under his direction, the organization raised more than $40 million to restore Frank Lloyd Wright's residential masterwork, the Darwin D. Martin House Complex, earning him nationwide recognition.

John Courtin died in July 2014 at the age of 65.

Robert M. Flanagan
(1944-2023)

Robert M. ("Bob") Flanagan, a retired stockbroker, received the John Carroll Award in ceremonies held at the Fontainebleau Hotel, Miami, FL, on Feb. 22, 2014.

The awards release on Flanagan noted the following: " After his graduation from Georgetown in 1967, Mr. Flanagan served in South Korea for 15 months as a noncommissioned officer in the U.S. Army before launching a career on Wall Street. He began his career at the New York Stock Exchange in 1970 and joined the firm of Weil and Duffy as a partner in 1973. Mr. Flanagan's firm was succeeded by Lawrence, O'Donnell, Marcus & Co. in 1987, and he retired in 1999 as senior managing partner.

"As an undergraduate, Mr. Flanagan was a member of the Georgetown Chimes (he is Chime No. 68) and played intramural sports. He has stayed involved with the university ever since. He served as vice president of the Georgetown Club of New York/New Jersey. He also served on the Board of Regents from 1996 to 2002, where he was a member of the Athletics Committee, as well as on the McDonough School of Business Board of Advisors and the Library Board. Mr. Flanagan was a member of the Parents Fund Council and Hoya Hoop Club. Extending his expertise in finance, he was one of the first members of the Wall Street Alliance Advisory Board and continues to mentor students who are interested in working on Wall Street."

Bob Flanagan died in 2023 at the age of 77.

Joseph L. Guarriello

Joseph L. ("Joe") Guarriello, a retired banking executive, received the John Carroll Award in ceremonies held at the Fontainebleau Hotel, Miami, FL, on Feb. 22, 2014.

The awards release on Guarriello noted the following: " Mr. Guarriello graduated from the McDonough School of Business in 1971 and Georgetown Law in 1974. After graduation, he launched his career at Arthur Andersen LLP, where he worked for 11 years. Mr. Guarriello then spent 12 years working for Mid Atlantic Medical Services Inc. in a variety of positions, including chief financial officer and general counsel. Now retired, Mr. Guarriello has time for many volunteer leadership positions. An avid Hoya fan, Mr. Guarriello has been a generous supporter and active member of the Hoya Hoop Club since the early 1980s. He has served on its Board of Directors, including terms as president, vice president for membership and treasurer. He also serves as president-elect for Hoyas Unlimited, a volunteer board with a mission to support Georgetown athletics.

"Since graduation, Mr. Guarriello has stayed close to Georgetown alumni and friends. He has been involved with several class reunions and enjoys attending basketball games with fellow Hoyas. For more than 30 years, he has been actively involved with the Georgetown University Alumni Association and has served as treasurer for six years. Since 2005, he has been a valued member of the Georgetown University Alumni Association Board of Governors and has held various volunteer positions, including chairman of the Audit and Finance Committee. He has also served on the Awards Committee and Campus Engagement Committee.

"Mr. Guarriello is past chair of the NHS Board of Visitors, and he and his wife, Joanne (N'72), have been reliable supporters of nursing scholarships. In 1997, the couple established the Thomas J. Piscetta Memorial NHS Scholarship in memory of Joanne Guarriello's brother, Thomas Piscetta (C'73), who died of cancer.

"In addition to his work for Georgetown, Mr. Guarriello is a member of the Board of Directors of the Georgetown Visitation Monastery."

J. Clifford Hudson

Clifford Hudson, chief executive officer of Sonic Corporation, received the John Carroll Award in ceremonies held at the Fontainebleau Hotel, Miami, FL, on Feb. 22, 2014.

The awards release on Hudson noted the following: " A graduate of the University of Oklahoma, Mr. Hudson continued his education at Georgetown Law, where he was a member of the legal honor society Phi Delta Phi. For the Association of International Law Students, he also served as an editor of its International Law Journal. After several years in private practice, he joined Oklahoma City-based Sonic Corp. as general counsel in 1984. Over the next three decades he held several positions within the company, becoming president and chief executive officer in 1995 and chairman in 2000. During his tenure as CEO, he has grown system revenues from $900 million to almost $4 billion, and Sonic's common stock has split six times.

"Mr. Hudson has been affiliated with many nonprofit and community activities, including his appointment by President Bill Clinton (F'68, H'80) as chairman of the board of the Securities Investor Protection Corp. in 1994. He was also chairman of the Oklahoma City School Board from 2001 to 2008, overseeing a $530 million turnaround of the inner-city public school system. In recognition of his public service, Mr. Hudson received honorary doctorates from the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City University. He currently serves as trustee of the Ford Foundation and is a past chairman of the board of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
